one day without shoes = one free pair of TOM’s

Hey everyone! Maybe you’re participating in this already, but if not, here’s your chance to take off your shoes and raise awareness for everyone who doesn’t have a choice of going barefoot. TOM’s shoes has declared today, April 8th, one day without shoes and I’m joining with them. I know it’s a little ironic that I got a pedicure for my birthday so my feet are extra pampered… but in some ways that’s exactly the kind of contrast that brings awareness to a day like today. It’s something that you may not think about until it’s gone, and I’m amazed by a company like TOM’s who has based their business and mission upon serving others. While there are a lot of non-profit’s that have adopted this mission, there very few businesses that have done so. It’s something we can all be challenged by – not only to reach out and serve others but to incorporate those kinds of actions into our daily lives. wow. that just blew my mind. What is perhaps even more amazing is that TOM’s has leveled the playing field, and something that has caught on as a fashion trend is also being worn by children in developing countries.

So, remember how in my birthday list I also said I wanted to have some awesome giveaways on my blog? Well I think this is the perfect time to start. Just cause I love you guys I’m going to buy a pair of TOM’s for one lucky commenter. How do you win? Comment on this post – today – and let us all know where you would wear your TOM’s, or who would wear the TOM’s you win and what size they’d wear. Maybe you want to wear them to your wedding, get them for your baby (they are super cute), live in them all summer long… I don’t know, you tell me and at midnight I’ll pick a random number to decide our winner. So get commenting, share this with your friends, and take off your shoes (until I send you some TOM’s to put on)

April 11, 2010 - 10:13 am

Mary Dougherty - you did, I’m sorry! stay tuned for more in the future

April 10, 2010 - 9:22 am

Sophie - Oh my gosh. I’ve been on vacation without internet. I THINK I MISSED THIS.

April 9, 2010 - 11:14 am

Mary Dougherty - sorry Monica! thanks for you comments though

April 9, 2010 - 9:27 am

Monica - …and this is me thinking today is the 8th. fail. :(

April 9, 2010 - 9:23 am

Monica - I would wear my size 8.5 Tom’s while I’m working on my paintings, cleaning the house, running to the grocery store, and for everything in between!

April 9, 2010 - 12:55 am

Paul - Cool that you’re doing this!

April 8, 2010 - 10:58 pm

Margaret B. - Can I just second Jeff Roeters’ comment? It was so simple and straightforward. Anyway, I’m super happy I came upon this madness before midnight! Is this what I miss when I am away from my computer all day?!

I would say that I’d wear some size 9 TOMS as dancin’ shoes at my wedding, but I’m sure they’d be long worn out by then. So I’ll just say I’d wear them in the flower shop and maybe practice my dance moves while I mop floors (like I did yesterday).

April 8, 2010 - 10:30 pm

liz - I would wear a pair of TOMS to work most likely. I have never owned a pair, but if they are comfy they would be perfect for me. Spending most of my day on my feet always has me on the lookout for comfy shoes!
PS, love the new green background!!!

April 8, 2010 - 9:57 pm

sarbob - mary, i can’t believe how many comments you have on this post! wow! plus i love the picture of you and Lexi’s little toesies. that nail polish looks super great in pictures, in addition to real life!! So if I won, which I shouldn’t since I’m your sister, I think I would get the free pair for little Julia’s toesies. And then I would buy a second pair for myself!!

April 8, 2010 - 9:12 pm

MarClair - When the teachers were running around today telling students to put their shoes back on…I didn’t realize it was for THIS reason! I would have taken mine off if I had known. I would wear my TOMS all over Doylestown as I looked for a summer job :)

April 8, 2010 - 8:58 pm

Bonnie Spear - LOVE this! I have been wanting to get a pair of TOMS! I tried to go shoe-less as much as possible today even though I was at work :) If I had some TOMS, I would wear them alllll summer long. Walking my pup, going to festivals & markets, taking photos…everywhere! :)

April 8, 2010 - 8:19 pm

Nita - I actually wanted to comment to thank you for this post! I had no idea this was happening until there was a campaign all over the high school this morning. The kids loved it! It seemed so ironic that the kids at my school felt so excited and liberated to wear shoes, but hopefully they got the message that it would be no fun to have no choice but to be barefoot!

I had heard about this company before. You may already know about this one too… but if you ever want a pair of sandals with a similar sentiment: http://www.ssekodesigns.com/ourstory/

I went with “starboard” :)

April 8, 2010 - 8:07 pm

Robin - so i forgot to write where i would wear the TOMS if I won them… and the answer is EVERYWHERE! My feet are so used to wearing sneakers, chasing after my 3 boys that they could use something super cute to wear! and for a change I might actually be a little bit in style! That would be fun!

April 8, 2010 - 7:51 pm

Mary Dougherty - campy did you just write a poem?! hah you are hilarious. Everyone’s comments have been great I love hearing from you guys and it sounds like there are a lot of adventures planned – wish I could come on some of them!

April 8, 2010 - 7:49 pm

Jillian - if i had a size 8 pair of toms i’d wear them all the time, and tell everybody else to get a pair, too! :)

ps – this is a great idea! this is the first i’ve heard of toms and i think the whole concept behind this company is awesome!

April 8, 2010 - 7:48 pm

Campy - Feet, feet
So simple, so plain
Uncovered today for all to see

Toes, toes
Painted or plain
Stubbing our toes now that is a pain

Shoes, Shoes
On our feet
Now we can walk on the hot sticky street

April 8, 2010 - 7:34 pm

Lydia Parsons - I also think this is a great idea, Mary! Way to support such an awesome company. If I won the contest I would wear my TOMS in Italy and all up and down the west coast, not to mention in good old New York :) I’d go for a size 9.

April 8, 2010 - 7:33 pm

Manda Townsend - (I like the grass background) Ok..so I’d give the TOMS to my sweet girl Ansley so she could wear them everywhere – to school – to romp at the park – to ride her bike -to race her brothers. Size 12.5!

April 8, 2010 - 7:26 pm

meg - well your blog just exploded mair. since when am i the 21st commenter? crazy. people like the contest, and your pictures of course :). are toms what hez, or rather jon, wore at their wedding? i seem to remember the good cause explanation and they looked great. i for one, could use a pair of nice closed toed shoes for work. or just loafing around. in fact, both of my flip flop pairs got chewed by dogs last summer so i’m on the hunt for summer shoes in general. they do seem like good farmers market, gardening shoes like one person said in a comment. i like that idea. maybe inspiration for the planting season? and eating/canning season? anyway, love the pic of you and lexi. super cute. nice pedicure. in terms of where i would wear them, that is for sure to be determined…i suppose you could find me anywhere across the map.

April 8, 2010 - 7:24 pm

Robin - Embarrassingly enough I had never heard of TOMS until i read your blog… I think being a “stay at home” mom in Houghton has put me out of touch with what’s in style! I think those camo tiny toms are adorable but think a pair for myself would get more use!!! Thanks for making me aware of this company, i love it!

April 8, 2010 - 7:01 pm

Emily - If I had TOMS I would wear them in the shower :) because I’d never ever want to take them off.

April 8, 2010 - 6:52 pm

Julia Szymanski - I love that TOMS is choosing to celebrate today like this! What a great reminder to all that there are those who have no choice. One for One is a fabulous campaign. Although I am impressed by TOMS commitment, I have never actually worn a pair of TOMS before. If I won, I’d definitely be sporting my pair all summer and sharing their message with the world. I’m a size 11, so people wouldn’t have to look very hard to see them on my feet :)

April 8, 2010 - 6:15 pm

Emily - I would live in a pair of Toms all summer – my feet would feel so free from my usual lab shoes too!

April 8, 2010 - 5:41 pm

Kate - O, man. I kind of wish everyone who commented could be wearing TOMs for the rest of the summer since all of the reasons, endorsements and general foot-love listed above are equally great… but if I were to wear a pair myself, it would be to a) remind me that so many others in the world are fortunate if they own even one pair of shoes, let alone the luxury of choosing what kind they want to wear and b) to prance around Houston in them once I move to the inner-city at the end of the summer, a world that could use the reminder that something and someone CAN change, one step and one giving at a time. Also – - I just waxed on slightly more freely/emotively than I had originally intended but that’s kind of exciting, right? Great idea, Mar :)

April 8, 2010 - 5:03 pm

Zach - Hey Mar! I am currently rocking out the grey and white leaf print TOMs and I LOVE them. If I got another pair I would reserve them as driving TOMs and take the trip to VA I have been talking about for months. ;)

April 8, 2010 - 5:02 pm

Christie Smethurst - mary, i still love reading your blog! and this is such a cool thing that you’re doing! after reading one of your earlier posts about TOMS the other night i procrastinated doing work and read up on TOMS website about what they do and everything. my bio classes this semester have definitely reinforced the need to protect feet. anyways, if i had a pair of TOMS i would wear them in the labs/medical clinic i’ll be working in this summer since those places don’t like flip flops.

April 8, 2010 - 4:49 pm

Elicia - i would live in them all summer long. absolutely.

April 8, 2010 - 4:16 pm

Kate Shaffner - Ooh, I like Toms! One of the students on the Houghton program last year wore them the entire time he was there and really loved them.
I wanted to say that I would want the camo Tiny Toms for Anna, but it looks like her feet are way too small. I would either get them for Anna anyway (and just save them for a while) or I would want a pair for the summer, since I was just thinking today that my current everyday shoes are waaaay too warm in the hot weather. 7.5. :) Thanks, Mary!

April 8, 2010 - 3:56 pm

Jordan Barnum - Good post Mary! i’m glad you are supporting TOMs initiative. I love the photo too lol. for the past few days i’ve been telling friends and family about the “one day without shoes”. Its such a good cause. Many development or charity initiatives focus on medical, education, and other stuff. While some those things in a sense may be more vital, the protection offered by shoes is an underestimated value. Many various diseases and infections are transferred through improper foot care/protection. and the great thing about the shoes Toms gives, is that they are medically “okayed”; TOMs shoes do not lend to aches, blisters, or back pain; they’re comfortable! If i had a pair of toms, i would basically live in them. They look good, feel good, and do good for someone else.

April 8, 2010 - 3:32 pm

Liz Petit - Awesome idea Mary! I would wear the TOMS in my lab all summer long since I’m not allowed to wear open-toed shoes :)

April 8, 2010 - 3:31 pm

melissa - mary, you are fabulous. your website and photos? yes please. and a free pair of toms? yes please.

April 8, 2010 - 2:56 pm

Ryan S - It’s always great to see companies that do this. They use their influence to make a difference. Now what would I do with TOM’s… well, they’d look better on Christie (7.5 or 8) and she’ll probably be found traipsing through farmers markets, gardening, and growing a baby this summer.

April 8, 2010 - 1:36 pm

Beth H - I love that TOMS gives away a pair of shoes for every pair that is bought. So really when you buy one pair, you are buying two! I would wear some size 7 TOMS all summer long and let people know what they are all about.

April 8, 2010 - 1:11 pm

Sarah K - I haven’t’ heard about national “no shoes” day. but this is a perfect contest for spring! I would love a pair, I’d wear them for my dancing shoes at Jarv’s wedding in June:) So I better win, you wouldn’t want me to have sore feet from dancing in heels would you?

April 8, 2010 - 12:54 pm

Melanie Wagner - I love Toms! Between my sister & I, we have about 7 pairs already and we both wear them ALL the time. They are super cute & comfortable and we love buying them since it is for a good cause.

April 8, 2010 - 12:25 pm

Allie - This is a great idea! I’ve wanted to buy a part of TOM’s ever since I heard about them! I would use them this summer — they would be great fun to wear on the beach! (I’ll be there for 2 months). 9 1/2 .

April 8, 2010 - 12:12 pm

Sara Bru - i love this mary! i’ve been wanting a pair of TOM’s for a while now. i love what this company is about about. their mission, their vision, their actions speak their words – something that many people do not carry through on. as i sit and counsel many people i see the affect of what this world has done to them and i am going barefoot today as a professional counselor! not something you really see being done. i want to wear them as a testimony to the students i counsel, live in the all summer long, walk the earth in them, have people ask about them and share what they are all about, and live out loud in them. i wear a size 8.5 :) i’m super excited you are doing this!

April 8, 2010 - 11:43 am

Amy - I also like Toms. They were on the Today show this morning!

April 8, 2010 - 11:43 am

Megan - I’m so excited for this contest!! I have seriously been looking to buy a pair for a while now, I just haven’t yet. And I completely agree with you Mar that TOM’s mission is awesome! (That’s the main reason why I want a pair.. it’s just an added bonus that they’re cute too ;) Anyway if I won, I would just live in them all summer long and wear a size 7.5!

April 8, 2010 - 11:32 am

Jeffrey Roeters - I like Toms. I like cute shoes that will look good on my feet.
